So as a fairly new business, and even newer blog, many of you haven't gotten to know me too well just yet...or, at least, haven't gotten to know my crazy antics and hilarious stories {or embarrassing...depending how you look at it}.
Well, I am going to jump right in...with the infamous bubble wrap story that I mentioned when I launched this blog...I hope I paint a good enough picture so you can imagine this.
In the first few months of my business, (October '08), I was extremely green when it came to the ordering process. And interestingly enough, I am not talking about my products necessarily. No, no, instead I am talking about supplies. An example...I have thousands and thousands of little manilla tags. Either I overestimated how many I would actually use, or I just didn't understand the concept of "bulk." So now, I have so many I don't even know what to do with! I started using them to write little notes on just so I could use some of them up!
Anyway, so when ordering my shipping supplies, I thought, of course I will need 2 rolls of bubble wrap. Makes sense right?
So the day after I ordered, I get a call from my local UPS store, where I was having everything delivered. I didn't get a chance to answer the call, but boy did I get that voicemail. The owner was screaming into the phone, something about how there was "too much!!!!" and then "come in immediately!" I didn't get this call until after the UPS store closed, so I wasn't able to follow up with them to see what the matter was.
The next morning, I drag my boyfriend Craig with me to the shop {ya know, just in case it got rowdy or something, hehe, you didn't hear how mad they were in my voicemail!}. Well, when we walk in...there are these two bad boys sitting in the middle of the store, staring me in the face...
I am not sure if this picture shows you just HOW big these rolls of bubble wrap really were...but let's put it this way...I had my sweet friend Jenn stand next to them, and the 2 of them stacked on top of one another were significantly taller than her!
After a chuckle out of my boyfriend Craig, I started out on my humiliating walk back to the office carrying {and rolling!} these huge things down the streets of New York, {in 2 trips, clearly!}. The crowded city streets were full of people staring at me, as I blushed, looked down, and just focused on the bubbles. In this moment I realized that not only did I underestimate the meaning of "bulk," but now I would have to come up with a creative way to include these in my home decor, as in, make one of these rolls into a piece of furniture, because it sure was not going to fit anywhere in the office!
I like writing about this now, because thankfully my ordering skills have improved ;) and also, it makes me extremely thankful for my time in Maryland right now, where I can just put large & bulky items into the back of my SUV and drive them to and from the UPS store, without the thousands of people staring at me wondering what I am doing with all that wrap...
